Understanding the Therapy Investment
The price of therapy can seem daunting at times; however, it is important and vital to understand the role of therapy in your life. Therapy has been proven to increase quality of life, decrease suicidal ideation, improve work performance, helps to alleviate symptoms from trauma, self-harming behaviors can be reduced, etc. These proven benefits are the result of two main ingredients: patient willingness and provider competence. In order to make sure that I am competent in helping my populations I have attended the best of the best trainings, schools, etc. My investment fee's cover the following:
Education: In order to provide mental health counseling, I have obtained a master's degree by passing two comprehensive exams known as the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE). After graduation, therapists must then complete & pay for 3,000 hours of supervised experience with 2,000 of those hours being direct client contact hours & a minimum of 200 face-to-face supervision hours. This supervision cost between $5,000-$8,000 I am currently exploring Ph.D programs that will require very similar expectations.
Continued Education: Therapists pay around $200 every 2 years to maintain an active license with their respective board of examiners. Therapists are also required to hold liability insurance which also averages $200 a year. Therapists are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of continued education every 2 years (20 hours per year). Continued education varies in cost but some CEU's for specialized trainings & certifications can cost over $4,000.
Independent Learning & Research: Outside of continued education requirements, many therapists are investing in various books, workbooks, research articles, & other resources that help expand our expertise & knowledge to be better therapists. Many of my adolescent patients will receive a binder that consists of various individualized skills, psychoeducation, etc. This requires purchasing of various supplies in order to meet and exceed the needs of my patient's. My goal is to get all of my patient's to graduate from therapy and live independent functional lives without the need for life-long therapy.
Time: Outside of the time that the therapist spends with you one-one-one, therapists are also required to document each session. If you therapist accepts insurance, there are a lot more documentation requirements that are needed for insurance reimbursement (often your insurance does not cover the full session costs & the therapist experiences a loss). Your therapist is also likely to be engaged in consultation, collaboration, & research in techniques & interventions that are going to improve your treatment outcomes. I am currently in certified as a clinical trauma professional (CCTP-II). I am currently working on my Dialectal Behavioral Therapy Certification to be a C-DBT. Plus, we provide homework and allow open communication between sessions to get patient's to a better quality of life faster. After hours communication is billed into the investment.
Administrative Costs: On top of the costs that are associated with the various requirements for therapists, there are a variety of administrative costs that include HIPAA compliant email systems, electronic medical records systems, office rent, decor & furniture, billing services, credit card fees, office supplies, marketing platforms (Psychology Today), website & domain fees, legal & accounting services, taxes (these are not already taken out as most of us in private practice are not W-2 employees), etc. These administrative costs can exceed over $35,000 a year depending on a few factors.
Caseload Considerations: Lastly, a therapist may have a higher rate to reduce the amount of clients on their caseload for a livable wage. By having a lower caseload, I can focus on providing the best quality care to my patients & have the time & energy to engage in the therapeutic process with my patients, thus reducing burnout and improving quality of care for smaller caseloads.
